Who We are and What We Believe

The faculty of UCSD School of Medicine uses dog vivisection to teach basic physiology and pharmacology to first-year medical students. Doctorsagainstdoglabs.com represents physicians who oppose this practice. We oppose it on moral and ethical grounds, and believe there are other effective ways to teach basic physiology and pharmacology.

We make the important distinction between using vivisection for purely demonstration purposes and using animals for medical and scientific research. None of the arguments put forth for the use of animals for medical research apply to -- much less justify -- the use of vivisection for demonstration purposes.

One of the most eloquent proponents of alternative teaching methods is Dr. Henry Heimlich, who devised the eponymous Heimlich maneuver. In 1986 the American Medical Student Association began urging medical schools to offer students alternatives to participating in demonstrations that use live animals.

If you believe as we do, we urge you to use your good name to influence the faculty of UCSD School of Medicine. Please read and sign the petition.
